Definition : Portable telephones designed to provide full duplex mobile communication through a network of wireless stations. These telephones usually consist of a small computerized device that includes voice communication, a display, and frequently a touch screen and/or a keypad used for entering data; smartphones may provide access to the internet. Smartphones typically include several capabilities such as text messaging (also known as short message service or SMS), e-mail, a photo and/or video camera, audio recording, gaming, and voice messaging. They may provide access to applications (dedicated software) that permit the performance of a great quantity of additional functions. The use of smartphones in the healthcare environment includes receiving and displaying data and images from physiologic monitors (e.g., glucose, electrocardiography) using dedicated applications and the transmission of text and voice messages (i.e., messaging) to and from hospital communication and/or information systems.
