Sterilizing Units, Filtration

Definition : Sterilizing units designed for partial or total removal of microorganisms from liquids by filtration. These devices usually consist of a unit that includes a cartridge with a porous membrane; filters whose pore size is about 0.45 micron are effective in some applications, but porous sizes of 0.2 micron or even 0.1 micron may be needed for bacteria sterilization. Filters with pores in the order of smaller than 10 nanometers are needed for virus filtration. The filtering characteristics depend also on the adsorptive qualities of the filter material and the filtration conditions (e.g., pressure). Filtration sterilizing units with appropriate filters for particular solutions, microorganisms, and/or flow rates are available; the units are mainly used in clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
