Definition : Physiologic monitoring software designed to operate multipurpose, multiparameter monitors, control/monitor a limited number of their functions, and/or process data obtained while monitoring. This software is intended to work only with one or a few models of multipurpose monitors, usually from the same manufacturer. The software may perform a variety of algorithms to facilitate the operation and analysis of the measurements performed while monitoring the parameters and/or while processing and/or transmitting/receiving patient information from workstations, and/or hospital information systems. Multipurpose monitoring software is not usually available separate from the monitor but may be updated (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the equipment; the software is mainly used for simultaneous bedside, telemetric, and central station monitoring used in physiologic monitoring systems. Dedicated software is available according to the parameters that the physiologic monitor or monitoring system can measure; additional software intended to add capabilities to modular monitors or monitoring systems is also available.
