Definition : Video cameras designed for external use during surgical procedures. These cameras usually include lenses to focus the visual image, semiconductor sensors (e.g., CCD, C-MOS), a mosaic or rotating color filter and electronic circuitry to generate the video signal; appropriate means to hold the camera and a light source for illumination. Typically the output signals from the camera are displayed and/or send to a video processor or to a remote station; some video cameras are capable of recording the images (commonly known as camcorders). Surgical video cameras are intended to document surgical procedures, to show the results in real time to observers outside the operating room, and to be used for teaching purposes. Dedicated surgical video cameras integrated with the surgical or head lights are available; camcorders that are not fixed to any structure are available; autoclavable cameras intended mainly for use in surgical procedures are also available.
