Stents, Eye, Glaucoma Drainage

Definition : Ophthalmic stents designed for deployment into the eye to create an artificial drainage pathway for patients with glaucoma. These stents may consist of a silastic or metallic (frequently heparin coated titanium) tube: one end is inserted through a small incision into the anterior chamber of the eye and the other under the conjunctiva or placed through the Schlemm's canal in such a way that the fluid is eventually absorbed by blood and/or lymph vessels; the shunt may be attached to the patient's sclera by sutures. Some stents also include a very small reservoir and/or valves to regulate the flow of liquid. Glaucoma drainage stents are typically used in patients with advanced glaucoma disease when, despite the use of medication regimens, laser treatments, or a previous glaucoma filtration procedure (trabeculectomy), the addition of a drainage tube is recommended.
