Definition : Ophthalmic diagnostic instruments designed mainly to assess the characteristic of the tear film. These devices typically consist of electronic handheld instruments that permit noninvasive measurement of the tear film, its layers (i.e., lipid, water, and mucus), and the tear meniscus between the cornea and lid, and visual determination of corneal surface irregularities. The device includes grids to facilitate examination and/or disks with patterns (e.g., Placido disks) to assess corneal irregularities. Tear visual functions analyzers are used to evaluate the tear film, evaluate dry-eye problems, and facilitate the selection of appropriate contact lenses.
