Photometers, Skin Melanin Content/Erythema

Definition : Photometers designed for in vivo measuring of the melanin and hemoglobin content (i.e., redness of the skin, known as erythema) in the skin. These instruments typically consist of a portable or mobile device that includes light emitting diodes as the source of light for illuminating the skin at several different frequencies, usually in the visible spectrum; a light detector (e.g., a photodiode) for measuring the light reflected by the skin at each (e.g., three) frequency; and software (algorithm) to calculate the melanin and hemoglobin content of the skin as a function of the absorbed light.
