Definition : Specimen concentrators designed to increase the relative content of substances in a sample (i.e., specimen) using a combination of centrifugal force, vacuum, and heat to speed evaporation. Vacuum concentrators usually consist of a tabletop device that includes a centrifugation mechanism capable of using several interchangeable rotors, a vacuum pump, speed and time controls, a display, and vacuum relief valves. Vacuum specimen concentrators are used mainly in clinical laboratories to concentrate biochemistry and/or microbiology samples when maximum throughput is required.
