Definition : Data management information systems designed to permit healthcare organizations to handle more patient telephone calls and provide better clinical advice in a timely manner. These systems typically consist of a combination of hardware and software. The hardware typically includes telephone receivers, dedicated network servers, and computers; the software consists of a dedicated software package that is capable of identifying emergencies through symptom assessment, while providing basic reference health information during the call management process. Telephone triage data management systems support nurse decision-making across the healthcare continuum; they may function as stand-alone systems or may be integrated in a hospital wide data management information system network.
