Definition : Serology reagents intended to detect toxins from or antigens or antibodies to Clostridium difficile, a species of bacterium of the family Bacillaceae. Clostridium difficile bacteria are part of the normal colon flora in humans; they grow in large numbers and produce a protein exotoxin in sufficient amounts to cause pseudomembranous enterocolitis in patients receiving certain antibiotic (e.g., lincomycin) treatments.
