Definition : Surgical instruments designed to manipulate (i.e., pass) ligatures and/or wires through or around tissue or bones during surgical procedures. These instruments are typically manual, handheld, flexible or rigid, slender devices with a distal end to hold the ligature and a proximal end with a handle appropriate to manipulate the ligature. Dedicated ligature carriers are available in a variety of shapes (e.g., rods, scissors-like) and sizes to pass ligatures and/or wires through particular anatomic sites.
