Monitors, Physiologic, Gastrointestinal Tissue, Carbon Dioxide, Bedside

Definition : Carbon dioxide monitors designed for continuous evaluation and display of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2) in the gastrointestinal tissue (PgCO2) that are hard-wired to the patient at the bedside. These devices typically consist of an external monitoring instrument that periodically displays (e.g., every 10 minutes) the values of PgCO2 taken from samples which have been automatically withdrawn from a nasogastric catheter. The monitoring unit is frequently incorporated as a module of a physiologic monitor. Gastrointestinal tissue carbon dioxide monitors are used mainly to assess gastrointestinal perfusion in hemodynamically unstable, critically ill patients.
