Stents, Bronchial, Metallic

Definition : Small bronchial stents manufactured from metallic alloys, such as stainless steel, platinum, or nickel titanium alloys (e.g., nitinol). These devices typically consist of a metallic (e.g., meshlike wire) tube, and some include a plastic cover. Bronchial metallic stents may be either balloon expandable or self-expandable; they are typically deployed under local anesthetics using flexible bronchoscopes. These stents are permanent devices mostly used to treat stenosis caused by malignant tumors.
