Stents, Vascular, Coronary, Balloon-Expandable, Drug-Eluting

Definition : Balloon-expandable coronary stents that include a drug on their surface (e.g., immunosuppressors such as sirolimus and tacrolimus, cytostatics such as taxol and its derivative, paclitaxel) that is released into the surrounding tissue over time (typically several weeks). The drug is usually placed on the stent surface using a polymeric coating or a special drug-eluting sleeve. Drug-eluting coronary stents are intended to slow down the growth of unwanted cells (restenosis) without inhibiting the endothelialization of the inner layer (i.e., intima) of the artery.

Entry Terms : "Drug-Eluting Stents (DES), Coronary Artery" , "Drug-Eluting Coronary Stents"
