Monitors, Personal

Definition : Monitors designed for continuous, nearly continuous, or intermittent patient self-monitoring of one or more physiologic characteristics (e.g., heart rate, glucose level, oxygen saturation), usually without removing body fluids, excrement, or tissue. These monitors typically consist of a unit worn by the patient (e.g., carried in a pouch, placed on a fingertip) that includes electronic circuits, a display, and appropriate sensors for measuring the required physiologic parameters. Some monitors also include alarms. Personal monitors may provide patients with real-time information on selected physiologic parameters (e.g., heart rate, glucose level, oxygen saturation) to improve patient self-management and to alert patients in the event values fall outside a predetermined range.
