Monitors, Bedside

Definition : Monitors designed to be deployed near the patient (i.e., at bedside) for continuous measurement and display of one or more of the physiologic (e.g., respiration, blood pressure) and/or critical care device (e.g., anesthetic gases, airway pressure) parameters utilized during patient treatment. Bedside monitors may be used as stand-alone units, usually in areas where clinicians closely monitor patients and in areas where patients require less intensive monitoring; however, they are most typically connected to a central station that receives, consolidates, and displays the information from several bedside monitors (i.e., bedside monitors usually are a component of larger physiological monitoring system within a given patient care area).
