Definition : Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum) to determine the protein osteocalcin (also known as bone GLA protein), the major noncollagenous protein in human bones. Osteocalcin is synthesized in the skeleton by the osteoblasts; it binds both free calcium and hydroxyapatite. Increased levels of osteocalcin in serum reflect increased osteoblast activity or bone formation (osteocalcin is a marker of bone formation); abnormal high levels are frequently found in diseases such as high-turnover osteoporosis, hyperthyroidism, and hyperparathyroidism.
