Catheters, Transtracheal

Definition : Catheters that are designed for percutaneous or surgical insertion into the trachea to the lung bronchial tree. These catheters usually consist of a thin tube (5 Fr mm in diameter) with an end hole; they are introduced into the trachea through a puncture wound between two of its upper rings using a needle and a guide wire. Transtracheal catheters permit normal speech, cough, and expectoration.
