Defibrillators, External

Definition : Defibrillators that generate electric impulses outside the body and deliver them to the heart through paddles (or electrodes), either directly during open heart surgery or externally through the chest wall. Most defibrillators include several sets of paddles (e.g., chest paddles, smaller concave paddles for the exposed heart) or, alternatively, disposable defibrillation electrodes. The maximum output energy is limited to prevent injury to the heart muscle (i.e., 50 and 360 J are typical for direct and external defibrillation, respectively).
