Definition : Automation systems designed to provide and control the distribution of supplies (material) throughout a healthcare facility. They typically consist of a combination of hardware and software that includes an appropriate server and a set of computerized dispensing cabinets located mainly in areas of high-volume patient treatment, such as procedure (e.g., catheterization) and operating rooms and/or nurse stations. The systems can accommodate different types of supplies according to the intended use. Decentralized supplies-dispensing automation systems may include a hospital material management information system, either as an integral part or interfaced. These systems are intended to provide complete automated material management capabilities, improving the safety and efficiency of hospital supplies distribution and providing better access, control of consumption, replenishing, and inventory of hospital supplies.
