Prostheses, Joint, Temporomandibular, Mandibular Fossa
Definition : Implantable prostheses designed to replace the mandibular (also known as glenoid) fossa of the temporal bone, providing an articulation surface for the mandibular condyle. These prostheses provide a partial substitution of the temporomandibular articulation; they are typically made of metal or a combination of metal and polymeric materials (i.e., a polyethylene fossa bearing may include a titanium mesh backing, known as fossa eminence prosthesis [FEP]). Mandibular fossa temporomandibular joint prostheses are used to treat adhesions, disc perforations, and ankylosis; they are also used as a component of total temporomandibular joint prostheses.
