Definition : Handpieces designed to operate surgical rotary instruments (e.g., drills, saws) used in surgical procedures for dissecting bone and cartilage, such as orthopedic, middle ear, and cranial procedures. Most surgical handpieces are driven by connection to a power source, typically a pneumatic system or an electric motor. Some surgical handpieces are battery powered.
