Mesh Pouches, Implantable, Pacemaker/Defibrillator, Antibacterial

Definition : Mesh containers (i.e., pouches) intended to carry or hold implantable pacemaker and/or cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) when placed into the patient. These devices are designed to provide a stable environment surrounding the implanted device and leads following surgical placement. They are constructed from biocompatible mesh that is coated with antibiotics, that is eluted (i.e., dissolved) locally within a specified timeframe (e.g., 7 to 10 days) within the surgical pocket for the cardiac device. These antibiotics help to provide protection from microbial colonization of the implanted device during and immediately after surgical implant. Both absorbable and nonabsorbable pouches are available. The absorbable version is constructed from bioabsorbable multifilaments coated with a bioabsorbable polymer designed to break down naturally over a period of time.
