Definition : Radiotherapy patient position monitoring systems that use laser-based optical surface scanning to track patient position during radiotherapy procedures. These monitoring systems usually consists of a single ceiling-mounted laser scanner unit placed above the foot end of the couch; computer workstations and dedicated software; audible and visible alarms to alert the technician of patient position changes from reference parameters (usually in the sub-millimeter range); and a remote control to operate the system from within the treatment room. Also available as an option is the ability to network to couch control systems. This allows clinicians to make automatic position adjustments and access previously stored patient settings. Laser radiotherapy patient position monitoring systems are used in radiotherapy suites to detect patient position changes in real time during radiotherapy.
