Orthoses, Upper Limb, Hand-Finger, Therapeutic

Definition : Hand-finger orthoses designed for external modification of the structural and/or functional characteristics of the hand, fingers, and the thumb, typically keeping the hand and fingers in a static (fixed) position during therapeutic procedures. These orthoses typically consist of a device that is placed encircling the distal segment of the forearm and/or wrist that is attached to a semi-rigid component used to support the fingers in an appropriate static position. Static therapy hand-finger orthoses are used mainly to prevent finger contractures after brain damage; dedicated splints and soft hand rolls intended for static finger therapy are available.
