Incubators, Laboratory, Aerobic, Carbon Dioxide

Definition : Aerobic laboratory incubators that provide accurate control on the carbon dioxide (CO2) level in the incubator chamber. These incubators typically consist of a chamber with controlled temperature (e.g., from 30 to 42 degrees Celsius/86 to 108 degrees Fahrenheit); high relative humidity (typically higher than 90%); and controlled levels of carbon dioxide (usually from 5 to 10 percent that are appropriate for cells to thrive. These incubators typically consist of an internal chamber isolated with a water or air jacket; microprocessor controllers for temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels(frequently using infrared sensors); they may also include air filters and/or copper components (e.g., copper stainless steel alloys) to avoid contamination. Carbon dioxide laboratory incubators are used mainly for growing cells that require oxygen for growth (e.g., bacteriology, virology cultures) and CO2 to promote cell growth; they are also used in other applications such as genetics, cancer tests, and in vitro fertilization procedures. They are available as tabletop and self-supported (i.e., floor) units.
