Definition : Angioplasty vascular catheters that permit the percutaneous transluminal removal of atherosclerotic plaque from the walls of arteries by mechanical means (e.g., cutting, drilling, pulverizing, shaving), resulting in a smooth vessel wall and little, if any, residual stenosis. Some of these catheters make possible the extraction of the atheromatous material from the arteries to the exterior.
