Prostheses, Joint, Temporomandibular, Mandibular Condyle
Definition : Implantable prostheses designed to replace the natural mandibular condylar head, providing an articulation with the mandibular fossa. These prostheses provide a partial substitution of the temporomandibular articulation; they are typically made of a combination of a (typically 45 to 55 mm) metal frame and plastic (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate) or a combination of metal and polymeric materials. Mandibular condyle temporomandibular prostheses are used almost exclusively in combination with mandibular fossa components in total temporomandibular prostheses; they are used in patients who suffer from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, congenital malformations, or neoplasms, as well as after trauma (e.g., fracture).
