Laboratory Concentrators, Specimen

Definition : Dedicated laboratory concentrators designed to increase the relative content of substances in a sample (i.e., specimen) to facilitate their analysis. These concentrators may use several technologies such as evaporation; a filtration mechanism including a filtration chamber, a pump (e.g., a syringe pump), and collection tubes; or filtration membranes and a high-capacity absorbent. Most concentrators include a dead stop to prevent samples from drying out. Specimen concentrators are used mainly in clinical laboratories to concentrate proteins in body fluid samples (e.g., urine) before immunoelectrophoresis or immunofixation.
