Definition : Central venous hemodialysis catheters that consist of a single-lumen silastic tube that may be used only with single-needle hemodialysis systems. These catheters are usually inserted via the external (or, less frequently, the internal) jugular vein or the subclavian vein and advanced to the superior vena cava; insertion through the femoral vein to the inferior vena cava is a less frequently used alternative.
