Prostheses, Joint, Hip, Acetabular Component
Definition : Implantable prostheses designed to be inserted into the acetabulum, replacing the socket of the hip joint. These prostheses provide a partial substitution of the hip articulation; they typically consist of a metal (e.g., cobalt or chromium alloy) or hard plastic (e.g., high-linked polyethylene) cup that serves as the bearing surface. Made of ceramics, polymers, or a combination of materials, the prostheses may be intended for use either with or without bone cement and may include a liner. Acetabular component hip joint prostheses are used mainly in patients suffering from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, as well as after trauma.
