Definition : Cylindrical metal rods incised with helical or advancing spiral threads designed to attach or tighten two objects, without the use of nuts or washers, when driven by rotating a manual screwdriver or by a powered rotary handpiece. Screws are used clinically in oral, dental, orthopedic, and other procedures; dedicated screws are available for particular uses, including direct internal fracture fixation, oral (maxillary and dental) surgery, and attachment of prostheses (e.g., long bone and skull plates) during orthopedic procedures.
