Oximeters, In Vitro

Definition : Oximeters designed primarily for determining the relative amount of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb and HHb, respectively) by measuring light absorbance changes in blood samples and displaying the results as percent saturation of hemoglobin in arterial blood (SpO2). The operation of these oximeters is based in measuring the light intensity that passes through a blood sample at different wavelengths, either using photometric or spectrophotometric techniques. In vitro oximeters are used in central clinical laboratories and also at the point of care in surgical areas and critical care units.
