Chromatography Systems, Gas

Definition : Chromatography systems in which the separation process is accomplished by forcing a gaseous mixture of analytes as the mobile phase (e.g., an inert gas, such as nitrogen or helium) through a column of the stationary phase. Separation of solutes in the mixture is based on the relative differences in their vapor pressures and their interaction with the stationary phase. A basic gas chromatograph consists of a gas reservoir and flow control device, an injector, the separation column, an oven, an online detector (sometimes a mass spectrometer), and, usually, a computer.
