Definition : Nonrigid enclosures designed to keep a controlled atmosphere for patient breathing; they may include capabilities for delivering gases and/or suspensions of liquid and particulates (i.e., aerosols) to the airways. These tents typically consist of a pliable, transparent plastic sheet held by a plastic or metallic frame that is suspended as a canopy above the bed covering either the whole bed or only the patient's head and upper torso. These enclosures are usually connected to oxygen, aerosol, or other gas sources through wide-bore tubing. The use of tents avoids the need to directly attach a nasal cannula, face mask, hood, or endotracheal tube to the patient. These tents are especially useful for treatment of breathing disorders in infant and pediatric patients or for adult patients who cannot tolerate such attachments.
