Prostheses, Eyeball
Definition : Prostheses designed to fill the natural orbital volume of the eye for cosmetic but not functional replacement of the eyeball. These prostheses usually consist of a plastic or, less frequently, glass sphere; the prosthesis requires some customization to resemble the shape and other characteristics (e.g., color) of the natural eyeball. Porous prostheses composed of hydroxyapatite that allow vascular growth inside the eyeball are available; prostheses that can be attached to endosseous implants in the bony orbit of the missing eye are also available. Eyeball prostheses are used after enucleation or evisceration of the eye due to injuries, diseases, or inborn abnormalities (i.e., an anophthalmic eye).
