Definition : Retainers designed to hold teeth in place during the period of functional adaptation while surrounding gingival tissue (i.e., gums) and bone adjusts to a new position following corrective orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic retainers may be fixed (i.e., nonremovable) metallic wires placed around tooth abutments or removable retainers that typically consist of a metallic wire surrounding the teeth or, less frequently, a transparent plastic device that fits over the entire tooth arch. These retainers are frequently used after the removal of or braces are removed to prevent rehearsal at the Modifications in the positions of the teeth and jaws gained by orthodontic procedures.
