Definition : Flexible endoscopes designed for insertion, either directly through the mouth or by an incision in the gastric wall, in the upper gastrointestinal tract for visual examination, biopsy, and treatment of lesions of the interior of the stomach and the proximal portion of the small intestine from the pylorus to the jejunum (i.e., duodenum). Gastroduodenoscopes usually include a flexible outer sheath, a lighting system, and a working channel for catheters and operative devices.
