Over the past 25 years, several factors have increased the demand for vitreoretinal subspecialist services: the increasing population of baby-boomers, increasing development of treatment options, improvements in surgical instrumentation and outcomes, and an increasing concern about medicolegal considerations in areas that have other retinal physicians readily available to treat potentially blinding emergencies. This paper discusses the ins and outs of expanding to the posterior segment.
