Anti Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) ELISA
Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) present at the apical plasma membrane of human thyroid cells catalyzes the first step in thyroid hormone synthesis. TPO oxidizes iodide-anions and iodinates some tyrosyl residues of thyreoglobulin (TG), leading to the formation of monoiodotyrosine (MIT) and diiodotyrosine (DIT). Coupling of MIT and DIT yields triiodotyronine (T3) and tetra-iodotyronine (T4). TPO (previously known as thyroid microsomal antigen) is a frequent epitope of autoantibodies in autoimmune thyroid disease.
