USS Sports Medicine™ originated as an R&D project within the Autosuture™ division of U.S. Surgical in the late 1980’s. The goal was to develop new applications for U.S. Surgical’s absorbable polymer and endo-mechanical instrument technologies. In the mid 1990’s the various components were assembled into a product line to be distributed by a subsidiary of U.S. Surgical, Surgical Dynamics, Inc.
Beginning in January 1997 a series of innovative technologies to enable orthopedic surgeons treating sports injuries was launched. The 3mm absorbable suture anchor came first, followed in quick succession by the EZ-Tac™ soft tissue fixation system, ArthroSew™ suturing device and the 7mm Meniscal Stapler. Sales were handled utilizing a network of independent distributors specializing in orthopedic sports medicine products. A 2mm absorbable suture anchor for certain hand and wrist injuries was released in 1999, along with the innovative AnchorSew™ system which integrated the 3mm suture anchor with
