Ceramic heads are harder than metal and are the most scratch resistant implant material. The hard, scratch resistant, ultra-smooth surface can greatly reduce the wear rate on the polyethylene bearing. The wear rate for this type of implant is less than Metal-on-Polyethylene

The Trident® Ceramic Acetabular System is a ceramic-on-ceramic implant system used to replace the "ball and socket" joint of a hip when a total hip replacement is performed for patients suffering from arthritis or related conditions. Unlike conventional hip implants, the Trident® system utilizes alumina ceramic-on-ceramic surfaces rather than metal-on-plastic or metal-on-metal. Ceramic-on-ceramic components have demonstrated significantly lower wear versus the conventional metal-on-plastic or metal-on-metal systems in the laboratory; therefore, it is anticipated that these improved wear charac

The shells are constructed of cobalt chrome and are available in 1mm increments to allow for exact sizing of the acetabulum. The bearing surface inside the shell is cross-linked polyethylene. The use of cross-linked polyethylene results in a significant reduction in the amount of particles that are created from wear compared to UHMWPE. There is an UHMWPE support ring inside the shell that is permanently fixed. There is also an UHMWPE locking ring that assembles above the support ring and locks into place once the head is inserted into the shell.
