Human T-cell Lymphocytotropic Virus (HTLV) can be divided into type 1 and type 2. HTLV-1 is directly associated with adult T-cell leukemia and HTLV-associated myelopathy or tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). HTLV-2 has also been linked to the occurrence of leukemia. HTLV can be transmitted by blood transfusions. Because of this, in Japan, the U.S. and some other countries screening for HTLV have been set as a requirement for all blood donations and blood related products.
