Auditory evoked potentials, also known as brainstem evoked potentials, are obtained by stimulating the auditory system with click stimuli. The brain responds to this stimulus by sending out small electrical voltage potentials, which our neural monitoring technologists record through electrodes that are placed on the scalp. By monitoring these neural action potentials between the cochlea (the inner ear cavity that contains nerve endings essential for hearing) and the aural processing centers in the brain, our neural monitoring technologists are able to determine whether or not the patient's he

Electromyography (EMG) is used during spine surgery to monitor the peripheral, lumbar, and cranial nerves. By monitoring the muscles which are stimulated by these nerves, our neural monitoring technologists can determine if a nerve root is being irritated or disturbed during the procedure. If a nerve root of the peripheral, lumbar, or cranial nerves is irritated in any way (bumping, stretching, etc.) during surgery, the nerve will depolarize, causing an action potential which in turn causes the corresponding muscle to twitch. The twitch is recorded by electrodes and immediate feedback is sent

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) are used during spinal cord surgery, particularly spinal fusion procedures. SSEPs are performed by simulating a peripheral nerve at the wrist or the ankle and recording the responses from the popliteal fossa, cervical spine/brainstem, and somatosensory cortex. SSEPs give direct feedback from the posterior columns of the spinal cord. Any changes in the responses (a greater than 50 percent decrease in amplitude or a greater than 10 percent increase in latency) may indicate an interruption of the posterior column pathways. Transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEP) are currently the most effective means of evaluating the pyramidal motor pathways and are used during orthopedic spine and scoliosis surgery, as well as neurosurgery where the motor pathways are at risk.
TcMEP monitoring is performed by stimulating the motor cortex and descending motor axons using transcranial electric stimulation,or a very mild electric current on the scalp. These currents are not painful for the patient, and are used only to stimulate a muscle response, typically in both the hands and legs. The motor potentials can then be record
